Educational Scientific Assembly

The Education Scientific Assembly (ESA) is one of eight scientific assemblies in the American Society for Clinical Laboratory Science (ASCLS). Each assembly is specifically designed to focus on issues and topics for practitioners in that discipline. The ESA is open to all educators within the field of clinical laboratory science. Members include those who teach in associate degree programs, certificate programs, and baccalaureate degree programs. The members may teach in community colleges, hospitals, universities, or academic medical centers.

Purpose

The purpose is to draw educators together to problem solve; share information; discuss trends in education, student recruitment; and to learn new methods and technology to assist them in teaching students.

Goals

  1. Provide outstanding national and interim programs for educators.
  2. Improve educators' participation in the society governance through appointments to society commissions and committees/task force groups.
  3. Promote networking within the CLS community through improved communication mechanisms.
  4. Identify and meet the needs of professional educators as possible within the resources of the scientific assembly.
  5. Recognize outstanding professional achievement in education.
  6. Increase membership and participation within the assembly and society in general.
  7. Further the development of education as a discipline within the profession of CLS for associate through doctorate level faculty members and administrators.

Organization

The ESA operates within the framework established by ASCLS. The entire SA structure is presided over by a SA Coordinator and Vice-Coordinator who report to the president of ASCLS. Each assembly has positions designated as the chair and chair-elect which are elected offices. The ESA coordinator serves a 2 year term, as does the vice coordinator (a 4 year commitment). Elections occur every other year at the ESA business meeting held during the ASCLS annual meeting. They take office at the close of that official business meeting. The list of duties for Coordinator and coordinator-elect are published in the ASCLS SA policy and procedure handbook.

Business Meetings

The ESA has 2 business meetings each year. One is held during the Clinical Laboratory Educators Conference (CLEC) at the end of February. The other meeting is held at the ASCLS Annual meeting.

Committees

The standing committees of the ESA are:

  • Educational Programs and Initiatives
  • Professional Achievement
  • Abstract Review
  • Student Research
  • CLEC Program

The Chair appoints ad hoc committees or task forces as necessary.

The Abstract Review Committee is responsible for reviewing all submitted abstracts for the CLEC meeting.   Abstracts are ranked and the accepted abstracts may be selected for either poster or oral presentation. Members of this committee are selected by the ESA Chair.

The Professional Achievement Awards Committee reviews applications for this award to recognize outstanding professional achievement of an ASCLS ESA member.

The Student Research Awards Committee is chaired by the ESA Vice-chair and includes educators with specialties in all discipline areas. Student paper submissions are reviewed and evaluated by the committee members and an award is given to the selected research paper and case study.

In recent years a Program Committee to select topics and speakers for the CLEC Program has been appointed. The membership is usually composed of CLS and CLT members from the local area sponsoring the CLEC Conference, the Chair and chair-elect of the ESA, and selected ASCLS members representing a variety of CLS/CLT academic and professional positions.

The Directory of NAACLS approved Online Clinical Laboratory Education Programs lists online programs that fall under one of four categories:

  • Clinical Laboratory Technician (CLT)
  • Clinical Laboratory Science (CLS)
  • CLT to CLS articulation programs
  • Graduate programs in Clinical Laboratory Science

The directory is divided into two separate files CLT & CLT to CLS listings and CLS & CLS Graduate Programs.

This directory of online programs will be amended annually as new information becomes available. Contact the ESA chair listed below for more information or to be included in the next update of this directory.

New members are always welcome to participate in the Scientific Assembly in any capacity.
