Summit on the Shortage of Clinical Laboratory Personnel
SUMMIT II

FINANCING EDUCATION

Obviously as the economy continues to roll along in its current robust state the full employment situation has drawn young persons into various fields of endeavor after high school, some of which go to college or participate in professional programs, and others who do not. A major effort should be to provide funding to prospective students directing them into our programs.

  • Several other fields (nursing, PA, pharmacy) are of coursed faced with this same dilemma. Some of them are looking at laws, statutes, ordinances, philanthropic entitlements and other sources upon which to build creative paths for young people to pursue this career.

  • The goals for excellence of individual health care organizations may provide the ingredients to make a path in assisting science-minded young people in not only financing their education (or partly) but also to make it to that institution. Perhaps some sort of "Model Contract" would be helpful here. Any such existing or to be developed model contracts should be accumulated and made available to all our organizations for wide distribution.

  • There may be legislative augmentation of Title VII, VIII (of the Social Security Act) that we could collectively undertake to come about that could provide assistance.

  • We could also propose more de novo federal financial assistance under some other umbrella.

  • Loan forgiveness is used in several other occupational education efforts deemed "important" or "essential" or "in demand", perhaps there is a way to orchestrate a family of solutions like these in our field. It is recommended that all of our governing bodies gather and share all useful information on such programs.

  • The participating organizations should work to provide a list to the NAACLS web site areas for any known or discovered free training (armed forces, etc.) and a cumulative list of available scholarships. This information should be updated by any knowledgeable party as a matter of course.

  • Industry (also in need of clinical laboratory personnel should also be included in the planning for partnerships and leveraging opportunities.
